Exclusive Q&A With Jamie Allan
1. What inspired you to become a magician?
For many, the journey begins with a magic set. However, my true inspiration sparked from an unexpected visit with my mother to an antique store filled with a magician’s entire belongings. It was like entering a trove of mystery and history, which ignited something within me. Many aspects of my show, AMAZE, are influenced by that pivotal experience and the remarkable coincidences that unfolded. It felt as if magic had chosen me at that moment.
2. What was the first magic trick you learned?
The first trick I was introduced to was a simple coin trick taught by my father, which felt like opening a door to a world where anything was possible. The sense of wonder that I felt is something I aim to recreate in every performance.
3. When did you perform your first magic show?
I staged my debut performance at the age of eight on a small platform that my parents built in an old pub they had converted into a cabaret space. It was a modest beginning, but from that moment on, I was hooked.
4. What is your favorite magic act and why?
Harry Blackstone’s floating lightbulb is by far my favorite act, especially the moment it glided off the stage and hovered above the audience. The astonishment I felt back then was unparalleled; nowadays, some may assume it’s a drone, but I assure you, it was not! The wonder of it surpasses technology in a way that continues to fascinate me.
5. Which magician do you most admire and why?
I have a deep admiration for Penn & Teller for their exceptional originality and the grand scale of their productions. Their theatrical style and the depth of thought behind each of their performances are truly remarkable.
6. What advice would you give to someone aspiring to be a magician?
Read books! Within those pages lie the greatest secrets. Many magic practitioners assert that the best place to hide a secret is in a book, as few take the time to delve into them. By immersing yourself in literature, you’ll discover brilliant ideas that have patiently awaited exploration for decades.
7. What are your future ambitions in the field of magic?
My primary goal was to perform in the West End and Broadway. We’re halfway to achieving the West End dream, and it feels truly fulfilling. The next objective is Broadway, and from there, the possibilities are endless. I simply wish to persist in challenging the limits of what magic can encompass.
