Famous Cooks Susan Feniger And Mary Sue Milliken Launched Their New Fine Dining Establishment Alice B In The Charming Locale Of Palm Springs

Susan Feniger and Mary Sue Milliken, celebrated cooks who have received prestigious accolades such as James Beard and Julia Child awards, have introduced their fresh dining place Alice B in the idyllic town of Palm Springs.

The culinary duo’s most recent project is situated within the Living Out LGBTQ+ retirement community in the lively core of Palm Springs. Having previously founded popular dining spots like City and Border Grill restaurants, authored various cooking manuals, and hosted a program on the Food Network, Susan and Mary have now unveiled Alice B. as a component of their Mundo Hospitality Group heritage. This establishment is well-known for its lively flavors, eco-friendly ingredients, hospitable assistance, and successful projects like Border Grill Trucks, SOCALO, BBQ Mexicana, and Pacha Mamas. As a token of acknowledgment for their cooking skills and inventive inputs to Southern California cuisine, the cooks were granted the esteemed Gold Award by the Los Angeles Times in 2018.

The eatery takes inspiration from the life partner of writer Gertrude Stein, and inside, visitors will encounter a captivating portrayal of the couple painted by esteemed British-American artist Jo Hay.

“Alice B. signifies a new chapter for us, a departure from our traditional Mexican and Latin-inspired inventions, and a return to our cooking origins. Susan and I obtained our training in classic French cuisine but draw inspiration from cooking influences globally. We are excited to introduce Palm Springs to our interpretation of delicious California-infused dishes that speak volumes through their ingredients. Hospitality is our strength, and we are eager to serve the dining population in Palm Springs,” shared Milliken.

During our dinner experience, Chef Feniger kindly paused for a discussion and disclosed that Alice B.’s highly-anticipated brunch service would kick off the following morning. She revealed details of the brunch menu, which features a variety of flavorful and sweet selections including morning biscuit sandwiches, challah French Toast, smoked salmon bagels, a morning grain veggie bowl, spring vegetable frittata, chopped Cobb salad, and an appetizing burger.

Guests have the option of choosing outdoor seating on the comfortable patio, within the chic dining area, or at the expansive bar that boasts a delightful piano atmosphere. The interior design captures the essence of Palm Springs’ mid-century modern style, complete with graceful chandeliers, a calming beige and blue color scheme, round chairs matched with sleek tables, and an exhibition of local artworks.

Alice B. presents a blend of Southern California, French, and Mediterranean-influenced flavors. Culinary direction is a collaborative effort between Feniger, Milliken, and Executive Chef Lance Velasquez, a recognized talent labeled as a “Rising Star Chef” by Esquire and featured among the “Ten Best New American Chefs” by Food & Wine Magazine. The menu showcases globally-inspired Californian cuisine.

The gastronomical offerings include delightful cornmeal cheddar drop biscuits with honey, yellowtail crudo, a tangy carrot and ginger soup, and a noteworthy starter of crispy gold potato croquettes with smoked ham.

Main courses consist of a roasted cauliflower wedge, creamy grits with chanterelles, branzino matched with celery root remoulade, chicken cutlet served with an apple radish pomegranate salad, Steak Diane, and succulent pork shoulder. The side dishes feature charred broccolini, crispy smashed potatoes, and sautéed sugar snap peas.

A tempting variety of desserts is available, including an apple gratin, tahini ice cream paired with chocolate sauce, and a delightful salted caramel pot de crème.

Customers can also relish an assortment of signature and classic cocktails, such as the revitalizing spirit-free citrus mint spritz and the energizing ginger hibiscus sparkler, both guaranteed to excite the taste buds.

Our visit involved a pleasant taste of the principal dining menu. The bar menu showcases comforting options like cream of tomato soup, marinated olives, a chilled wedge salad, baked macaroni, grilled cheese sandwich, cornmeal cheddar biscuits, and smashed potatoes.

“Crafting inviting dining environments that nurture connections through food has always been our enthusiasm. Mary Sue and I have cherished our time in Palm Springs with family and friends, drawing inspiration from the area’s spirited essence,” expressed Feniger. “We envision this establishment as a sanctuary for guests to unwind, savor delicious cuisine and beverages with loved ones. Adding a special touch is that this restaurant pays homage to the love between Alice B. and Gertrude Stein, enveloping guests in their profound relationship from the instant they enter, providing a glimpse into their remarkable journey together. Our aspiration is for Alice B. to feel like a second home you’ll keep longing to revisit.”

Alice B. welcomes guests for dinner from Wednesday to Sunday, offering both indoor and outdoor dining experiences. Operating hours on Wednesday, Thursday, and Sunday are from 5PM to 9PM, extending to 5PM to 10PM on Friday and Saturday. Weekend brunch is served on Saturday and Sunday, starting at 9am. Find Alice B. at 1122 E Tahquitz Canyon Way, Palm Springs, CA 92262.
