The era of the 1950s witnessed an exceptional period for creative design, especially in the automotive sector. An exemplary manifestation of this phenomenon is the remarkable 1957 Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Roadster, currently up for auction at RM Sotheby’s. This particular lot stands out uniquely as it represents the final 300 SL model that underwent a full restoration by Rudi & Company, offering unparalleled quality that has garnered significant interest in this striking Mercedes.
Retaining its original chassis, engine, gearbox, and body, the 1957 Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Roadster embodies a genuine sense of authenticity, setting itself apart from its peers. Priced at $1.9m, this exquisite vehicle caters to serious automobile enthusiasts exclusively. Adorned in a Silver Grey Metallic exterior and a Red leather interior, the aesthetic appeal of this Mercedes is undeniably sophisticated, earning our admiration here at The Status Life.
Although this 300 SL Roadster was manufactured to meet US standards, historical records suggest that the car was initially delivered to Germany instead of being shipped directly to North America. Its rich history began when it was first purchased by an American military lieutenant stationed in Germany during the 1950s.
The meticulous restoration of the vehicle was assigned to Rudi Koniczek of Rudi & Company, a renowned specialist for the 300 SL in Victoria, BC. The car underwent a thorough restoration process, which included stripping it down to its bare metal, revealing surprisingly good conditions. Upgrades comprised of brand-new rubber components, European-style headlights, fresh taillight lenses, and all-new glass, alongside re-chromed original trims to meet show standards.
Restored to its initial color scheme, this 1957 Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Roadster underwent a 300-mile test drive before undergoing an additional servicing session to ensure optimal performance. Lastly, the car comes equipped with a Becker Mexico radio, tool roll, tire iron and jack, soft-top head guards, and a set of bespoke luggage crafted in 1079 red leather by Taris Charysyn & Co.
