At first glance, the modest exterior of Grato belies the fact that it houses a James Beard Award-Nominated culinary practice. This West Palm Beach gem, birthed from the culinary expertise of Chef Clay Conley, delivers a straightforward philosophy: serve joyful, unpretentious fare.
While numerous chefs might opt for intricate additions to express their artistry, Chef Clay’s offerings shine with an emphasis on purity of flavor. This is not to say that guests won’t find imaginative offerings gracing the menu.
Open for nightly dinner and a Sunday brunch, Grato (Italian for “grateful”) presents an approachably priced bill of fare featuring a mixture of petite and hearty plates, an array of pizzas, and pasta available in both entire and demitasse servings. It’s our heartfelt gratitude that this traditional trattoria with a casual vibe is celebrating its eighth anniversary at this preferred venue.
Engage with the spirited bar scene, sipping one their handcrafted libations like the Zesty Flamingo Margarita, or choose a tried-and-true selection such as a crisp gin martini or a pour of vino from their impressive inventory.
Do not pass up the opportunity to try their meatball starter. A trio of meatballs, bathed in a lively tomato concoction, are served in a cast iron skillet resting on smooth polenta. Be sure to keep a portion of their fresh-baked bread on hand to soak up every drop of the savory sauce.
Additional standouts among their Petite Dish selection include an octopus tabbouleh made vibrant with cucumber, mint, and a touch of preserved lemon yogurt.
Their 12-inch woodfired pizzas have won the hearts of locals.
Mouthwatering options range from the highly sought-after Diavola, adorned with smoldering mozzarella, pepperoni, peppers, onions, and a hint of spicy honey; to the classically simple Margherita bursting with fresh mozzarella and basil; and an indulgent Local Mushroom topped with black truffle, fontina cheese, and charred scallions.
For those seeking novelty, they serve a Detroit-style pan pizza as well as a black truffle pie enhanced with Gruyere and chives.
A standout orecchiette features Florida rock shrimp mingled with fennel and roasted cherry tomatoes enveloped in a white wine sauce. For those seeking comfort in a plate, the chicken parmigiana offers breaded chicken perched beside fresh spaghetti.
Handcrafted desserts span from gelato and sorbet to a cookies and cream cheesecake. Conclude with an espresso martini for a meal to remember.
Grato can be found at 1901 South Dixie Highway in West Palm Beach, Florida.
