It is frequently mentioned that they “don’t manufacture them like they did in the past” and this appears particularly accurate for automobiles because, truthfully, the vehicles from the 50s and 60s stand out when it comes to aesthetics. To effectively demonstrate this, we introduce to you this magnificent 1965 Aston Martin DB5 Convertible currently up for auction with RM Sotheby’s, a car that wouldn’t seem out of place with James Bond at the wheel.
This magnificent 1965 Aston Martin DB5 Convertible from RM Sotheby’s was originally created as a showcase vehicle for the Salón Internacional del Automóvil de Barcelona and is exceptionally rare, being one of only 39 DB5 Convertibles specified in left-hand drive. It underwent a top-notch restoration at Aston Martin Works Ltd, the prestigious birthplace of the brand; has chassis and engine numbers that match and is coated in California Sage over Red Connolly leather, accompanied by an exceptionally rare matching factory hard top.
The frame of this sophisticated and sleek vehicle was sand-blasted, meticulously aligned, and painted in factory-accurate colors, demonstrating an extreme attention to detail such as the application of red oxide paint in each of the foot wells. Inside, the cabin underwent a complete re-trimming, with refurbished seats upholstered in the accurate Red Connolly hide, along with brand-new carpets and headlining. The original straight-six engine was completely dismantled and reconstructed, with minor adjustments such as adding hardened valve seats, updating rubber hoses with modern silicone versions, and altering the cooling jacket waterways. The Weber carburettors were enhanced to the latest “Works” specification.
Besides being an incredibly sought-after convertible version with a remarkable historical connection to motor shows of that era, this Aston Martin DB5—with matching chassis and engine numbers—has benefitted from a comprehensive refurbishment overseen by the leading experts of the marque at Aston Martin Works Ltd. Painted in the rare and extremely appealing shade of California Sage, this elegant open-top iteration of Aston Martin’s legendary DB5 undoubtedly stands out as one of the finest examples of its kind, truly deserving of its spot in a top-tier collection of custom-built grand tourers.
